The apartment building “Urban Stripes” is located in Koukaki, a district of Athens with landmarks of modern architecture, such as the Fix building by Zenetos and the Acropolis Museum by Tschumi, as well as typical Athenian apartment buildings.
The first floor is different from the rest both in usage and appearance, similar to the Acropolis Museum. The back facade, also significant, faces the grey, neglected, unseen side of the capital. Here, the concept of filtering is employed, achieved through viewing from colored glass panels of different hues.
Following forms from the past, used in a different way, the lost aesthetics of old Athenian apartment buildings are highlighted. The cylindrical stairwell and the irregular windows are reused as a contemporary depiction of the almost random appearance of the uncovered sides of Athens. Each floor is different, and each apartment responds to different questions and life scenarios. As the height increases, the view of the Acropolis is gradually achieved, transforming from partial to complete. The interpretations of organization and requirements meet the old type of penthouse and the setback of the volume from the 5th floor upwards. The penthouses, with unified balconies and continuous glass facades, create the main view towards the Parthenon.
